Even though I understand intellectually that exercise will help when I'm depressed, when I'm deeply depressed I sometimes still just can't seem to do it. If I get really bad I have to fight with myself to even brush my teeth or take a shower.

Completely understandable. Depression keeps you tied down. You may want to find a workout partner, that should help.

The first counselor I ever had over 15 years ago told me that exercise would help reduce stress. Therefore, I decided to start becoming more active. Fortunately then I lost weight too because I had to walk to and from classes when in college. I still feel quite a bit better after a nice walk. It may not always pull me out when I am hitting bottom but it does improve my feelings about myself considerably and I like that "natural high."

Yes, this is partly true. But I guess it all goes down to one thing - how you motivate yourself. If you are not motivated enough to get some exercise, then you are most likely to just stay at your bed and eat all day.
