Article: Depression in College Students

Very true, first year of college is very difficult, especially for those who move out of their hometown to attend school in another city or state. For many it may seem exciting and fun to finally be away from the parents and family and have the opportunity to meet new people and create their own experiences but the reality is that unless they are mentally prepared to live by themselves and have the ability to interact with different kids from different backgrounds, different beliefs, different upbringings and different personalities that first year of college can be a horror and ultimately it can lead to depression. My first semester attending a college away from home and dorming with someone who was the total opposite from me was very difficult, I tried my best to 'fit' in and be open minded but I still felt alone and couldn't relate to anyone. I missed my parents and my old friends like crazy and I became depressed, uninterested in any activities, I became a loner and no matter how hard I tried to become part of the 'group' I really wasn't interested. I believe colleges should have a good mental health dept and should encourage students to visit the dept, they should also be more proactive and should reach out to those students that show signs of depression.
